The Sami people are the northernmost indigenous people of Europe, and have "tribes" in Sweden, Finland, Norway & Russia. They herd reindeer, trap for furs, and make exquisite handicrafts. Every year, for the past 400+ years, the Sami have held a Winter Market at Jokkmokk, a town just inside the Arctic Circle. The Market is a colourful, vibrant occasion with furs, skins, and handicafts, ranging from the utilitarian to museum-quality works of art, on display and for sale - plus Reindeer Racing & Dog-Sleigh rides! There is no sense of "let's dress up for the tourists" they are just showing us how they live, what they can do, and they are friendly, courteous and happy to share their knowledge with the people who persecuted them for generations. -
